How much does flight instruction cost in Dallas-Fort Worth?

Settle Aviation charges 75 dollars per hour for flight instruction and 50 dollars per hour for ground instruction, identical at every airport served, with no travel surcharge for meeting you at your field. The airplane is billed separately and depends on which one you fly: 165 dollars an hour wet, with fuel included, for any of the Rotax-powered light sport trainers, and 415 dollars an hour wet for the Tecnam P2006T twin used for multi-engine training. So one hour of dual instruction in an RV-12iS comes to 240 dollars, with nothing billed for preflight or postflight and no fuel receipt afterward. The other costs of a certificate are paid to others: the FAA knowledge test to the testing center, the checkride to an FAA designated examiner, and your medical to an aviation medical examiner. Call or text and I will walk through the full numbers for your situation. There are no packages, deposits or minimums.

What is the difference between a private CFI and a flight school in DFW?

A big flight school in the Dallas-Fort Worth area typically employs multiple instructors, which means you may fly with a different CFI each session. Every new instructor spends the first part of your lesson getting reacquainted with where you left off, what you worked on last time, and what your specific gaps are. That is time you are paying for but not progressing. A private CFI gives you the same instructor from your first lesson to your checkride. That instructor builds a complete picture of how you fly, knows exactly what you need to work on, and tailors every session to your specific weaknesses. Private CFIs also tend to offer more flexible scheduling, including evenings and weekends, because they are not tied to a flight school desk or a shared aircraft booking system. Pricing is typically similar or lower than a flight school because there is no facility overhead built into the hourly rate.

What airports does Settle Aviation use in the DFW area?

Settle Aviation flies mainly out of two home fields north of Fort Worth: Hicks Airfield (T67) and Aero Valley Airport (52F) in Roanoke. A Van's RV-12 is based at each, and that is where most lessons, discovery flights and flight reviews happen. Other fields are available by arrangement, including Dallas Executive (RBD), Arlington Municipal (GKY), Denton Enterprise (DTO), Addison (ADS), McKinney National (TKI) and Mesquite Metro (HQZ), when there is an airplane for us to fly there, usually yours or one you already rent. Settle Aviation is a private CFI, not tied to a single FBO, so the choice comes down to your drive and your airplane. Flying out of more than one field during training is good for you: it exposes you to different airspace, tower communications and traffic patterns, producing a more capable pilot than one who only ever flew at a single home field.
